According to the Catalogue of CPE Bach's Estate, the two works in this volume were composed in Berlin in 1740 and 1746 respectively. Although the two compositions are listed as separate works, they are rather two versions of the same piece. It is known that CPE Bach often revised his earlier compositions. In this case, the last movements are almost identical, whereas the second movement of Wq125 was replaced by a more modern and more extended Allegro in sonata form. The first movement of Wq130 can probably best be understood as a re-composition that retains the basic harmonic outline and some of the characteristic melodic formulas of the earlier version. It remains, however, unclear whether or not CPE Bach regaraded both versions as legitimate alternatives ot whether he intended to replace Wq125 with the later version Wq130 and this fact was simply overlooked at the time when the catalogue of his estate was prepared.
