“Le Roi Malgre Liu” is a comedy set around the election of Henri de Valois as King of Poland. A French courtier and Polish princess are involved in a series of disguises and intrigues with a predictably happy ending. Chabrier composed a colorful score, complete with ballet sequences, which appealed to 19th century French tastes.
Dance Slave is adapted from the introductory music of the opera's third act. It is one of the few extracts from this opera that is performed in a concert setting today. The composer marked the dance “Mazurka” but, rhythmically, this piece is more akin to the Polonaise. Chabrier's typical spontaneity glows through every measure of this balletic excerpt.
Arranged for 6 C Flutes, Piccolo (doubling on C Flute), 2 Alto Flutes, 2 Bass Flutes and Contrabass Flute.
