Instrumentation: 3 piccolos, 4 c flutes, alto flute
Score and parts
This packs a punch, despite its cuddly-sounding title! Everyone needs to be on the alert, as nothing is safe; restless, skittery patterns establish themselves, then suddenly stop; fanfares appear, clashing and sharp; smooth lines intersect with restless, bubbling rhythms like a strange melting pot – and then, like that, it fizzles and pops; it’s gone!
Composer John Holland has been composing and arranging since his teens and loves working on pieces to be enjoyed by community musicians; his work ‘Green Sky’ won the Making Music category of the British Composer Awards in 2008, written for the London Contemporary Chamber Orchestra. He conducts Lambeth Wind Orchestra and the London Consorts of Winds Clarinet Choir and can also be found in various ensembles playing large clarinets, saxophones, low brass and percussion as well as working full-time in finance for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
