About D'ror Yikra:
Not much is known about this beautiful melody except that it is traditionally sung by Yemenite Jews during the Sabbath. The title D'ror Yikra translates as “He Will Proclaim Freedom.” The lyrics – a prayer – is positive and peaceful, as in this translation of the first verse:
He will problaim freedom for all of His children
And He will keep you as the apple of His eye;
Pleasant is your name and you will not be destroyed.
Repose and rest on the Sabbath day.
The work is essentially in Phrygian mode (using only the white notes on a piano it would be from E to E – the same as used in this arrangement), and this setting adheres to it for the most part. The arrangement was written for, and dedicated to, flutist Amy Ziegelbaum and pianist Laura Leon; both premiered the work at a special concert of Jewish music at Queens College, CUNY.
