Description
A Dry Weather Legend for Solo Flute and Piano by Robert Russell Bennett
Edited by Janet S. Somers and Paul M. Somers
A Dry Weather Legend for flute and orchestra was written in 1947 especially for and dedicated to Bennett’s close friend and colleague Lamar Stringfield, flutist and conductor of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra. Lamar Stringfield (1897-1959) was a member of George Barrere’s flute class, a composer, conductor and proponent of Southern folk music. Stringfield performed the flute solo part with the Knoxville Symphony orchestra in the work’s premiere performance. The work is based upon the “water-well” version of “The Tar Baby”, a West Virginia folk legend. A Bb version of the work for solo flute or clarinet with piano or wind ensemble is also available.
