Jacob Koppel Sandler (1860-1931) wrote the song “Eli, Eli” (or “Eili, Eili”) with the text by Boris Tomeshefsky, for M. Horowitz’ operetta “The Jewish King of Poland for a Night” (1896). Featuring all of the various performers in the flute choir, this song very effectively relates the feeling of sadness and despair. (“My G-d, my G-d, why do you forsake me?”)
