A leading German composer of the late Romantic and early modern eras, Richard Strauss (1864 – 1949) is known for his operas and tone poems. He was also a prominent conductor throughout Germany and Austria.
Der Rosenkavalier, or the Knight of the Rose, is a comic opera in three acts, and is loosely adapted from the novel 'Les amours du chevalier de Faublas' by Louvet de Courvrai and Moliere's comedy 'Monsieur de Pourceaugnac'. This selection is the final trio between The Marschallin, Sophie, and Octavian, in which Octavian hesitates between the two women (Sophie, whom he loves, and the Marschallin, his older lover). The Marschallin releases Octavian, encouraging him to follow his heart and choose Sophie.
