This piece was commissioned by Naomi Seidman and the Penn State Flute Choir for a performance at the 2013 National Flute Association Convention in New Orleans.
The Zydeco Genre:
Zydeco is a style of dance music originating from the Creole populations or rural Louisiana. If fuses of a variety of genres, including Cajun, blues, and soul. It is characterized by the accordion and the frottoir, an kind of breastplate adapted from a washboard, which people play using thimbles on their fingers on their fingers and brushing and scraping it, often adding extra adornments such as cymbals. This piece synthesizes quotations from artists Roy Carrier, Beau Jocque, and Rockin' Dopsie Jr.
The Percussion Part:
It is recommended that at least two members of the ensemble act as percussionists.
Notes with upward stems should be a percussive beat, played on an instrument such as a cowbell or tambourine (preferably a rock and roll tambourine, rather than an orchestral tambourine).
Notes with downward stems should be played on an instrument with a scraping sound, such as a cabasa or guiro.
