One of the leading French composers of his generation, Faure is considered to be the link between the end of Romanticism and the modernism of the second quarter of the 20th century. He composed nearly one hundred songs for voice and piano. Of all of his compositions, these are considered his most valuable works. The lyrical and intimate nature of these songs make guitar accompaniment an appropriate and very satisfactory option. The songs selected are from various periods in the composer's life, and, although they do not constitute a song cycle, they do work well together. The songs are Dans les ruines d'une abbaye op. 2 no.1, Apres un Reve op. 7 no. 1, Ici-bas op. 8 no. 3 and Sylvie op. 6 no. 3.
