From the Composer:
Inspired by Samuel Barber's Excursions for Piano, Opus 20, Four Excursions for Flute and Guitar are among my earliest compositions. Numbers I and III embody my folk music origins and an early fascination with major seventh chords. They were written for a high school composition class when I was seventeen. There's a hint of Aaron Copland in these early works, who, along with Barber, Leonard Bernstein and Ralph Vaughan Williams, were my greatest influences.
Excursion IV was written for a classmate's college graduation recital and in contrast to Excursions I and III, utilizes more counterpoint. The folloiwng year I added the last Excursion, number II. Continuing the contrapuntal thread, it explores harmonies built with intervals of fourths, as I move to a more modern musical language F.H.
