Ireland's folk music has such a rich heritage and inherent musical value that it has become beloved around the world. The Irish Minstrel Boy evolved from a melody called The Morren. Its lyrics are sad and wistful, telling of a young boy, a harp player, who went to war and was killed. In a tumultuous period under Engligh rule, Irish patriots wore green as a symbol of their nationalist pride. Such display often roused the ire of the English consabulary and the wearers were shot for their offense. Wearing Of The Green tells of this defiant but proud act of patriotism. Molly Malone is also known as Cockles and Mussels, which is what Molly sang as she walked through the streets of Dublin peddling her catch from the sea. There is a statue celebrating Molly at the corner of Grafton and Suffolk Streets in that city. The Galway Piper is an Irish drinking song that dates to 1740. It most likely originated in the western country of Galway, hence its title.
