This work was composed in 1818 to commemorate the 50th year of the reign of Frederick Augustus I of Saxony. The work concludes with the familiar tune, 'Heil dir im Siegerkranz' (God Save the King). Because this tune is also known with the words, 'My Country, 'Tis of Thee,' the overture can be performed not only as a concert work, but may find a place at patriotic events as well!
