“In Loja (a small town in Ecuador where I was born) we call múchica a round grindstone used for crushing – against a larger, flat stone – things like salt, dry meat, spices, etc. It produces a strange, percussive, mineral sound, which I always related to stories of ghosts and apparitions. For a while the repetitive sounds the múchica haunted the nights of my childhood. In this piece I recreate (exorcise?) this one and other images from my early days in Loja.” – Diego Luzuriaga
