Description
Anthony Scott Watson (b. 1962)
About this piece, the composer has written: “Legend is a one movement work based on two seminal ideas. The first, heard in the opening flute solo, is free and improvisational with slowly evolving harmonic material; pan pipes are evoked. The other is a motivic, four-chord succession with a more regular rhythm. Embedded in this succession is a phyrgian cadence, which becomes a prominent part of the piece. Legend weaves artifacts of musical tradition, which conjure music of the distant past, into its romantic, thwentieth-century idiom.”
