Madrigal by Philippe Gaubert
For flute and piano
Published by Little Piper

Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) is best known to us today as a famous flutist who was professor of flute at the Paris Conservatory in the early twentieth century.  He studied with Paul Taffanel, with whom he collaborated in compiling a method for flute.  The resulting flute method book, published in three volumes is still popular today.  Actually, his renown as a conductor overshadowed his reputation as a flutist during his life.  He was widely acclaimed as an expert in conducting the operatic works of Richard Wagner, and was similarly recognized for his talents in exploring and introducing new operatic works to the repertoire.  He composed numerous chamber works, mostly for flute or violin, and he wrote a few operas and ballets as well.  His flute pieces are noted for their lyric quality and are very much in the romantic style of composition.  This Madrigal for flute and piano is probably his most popular work, and it shows Gaubert’s proficiency in the use of chromatic harmony while equally displaying the beauty of his expressive writing. — Little Piper
