Meditation by Dan Fox
Adapted from “The Little Prelude” of J.S. Bach
For Alto Flute (or C Flute) and Piano
Published by Alry Publications
Includes score, alto flute part, and alternate C flute part
This piece was inspired by the melody Gounod composed using the first Prelude from the “Well-Tempered Clavier” by J.S. Bach. In playing over another Bach prelude, the so-called “Little Prelude,” I was struck by the fact that, to my knowledge, no one had ever added a melody to it, though its continual flow of arpeggios is admirably suited to such treatment. Although many instruments could probably play the melody I have written, my first choice is the warm and full-bodied sound of the alto flute. I urge the player to pay close attention to the breath, spinning out the long legato phrases with as few breaks as possible.
