Composer and flutist Louis Moyse turned 90 in 2001. Louis lived in Montpelier, Vermont, and the Montpelier Chamber Orchestra Society wanted to honor him with a new piece—Mirrored Birds—at a special concert by the orchestra. It was commissioned by the Society for an all-French concert. The flutist at the premiere was Grammy-nominated Karen Kevra and the conductor was Catherine Orr. The concerto is unusual in its integration of the flute and orchestra texture so that the instrument, though it maintains a unique line from the ensemble, rises out of and falls back into the orchestral bedstraw. The high-minimalist orchestral accompaniment works its way from a col legno rhythmic opening to a rich string-driven pulse, pivots on the central cadenza, and moves back to the opening: the first six notes of Louis Moyse’s first flute sonata. Louis was surprised to hear those notes and their eventual progress through a half-hour pulse-minimalist concerto. (Mirrored Birds is part of a set for various instrumentation that also includes LowBirds, Middelburd, and HighBirds (Prime)–In Memoriam Iannis Xenakis.)
