“I recommend Monsieur Jeanjean's flute Studies not only to pupils but to teachers. They are admirable preparation for the difficulties of modern flute music.” -Philippe Gaubert
These studies, like our “Études de perfectionnement” are mainly intended to accustom the pupil to reading and performing combinations of chords and rhythmic figures prevalent in modern classical music.
Highlighted features include:
Study No. 15: different types of minor scales, oriental scales, the diatonic pentatonic scale, medieval heptatonic octaves and 5/4, 6/16, 7/4, 9/16 time signatures.
Study No. 2: whole-tone scales (or “Chinese” scales), augmented fifth chord and its inversion.
Study No. 11 (oriental style): 5/2, 3/8, 6/16, 3/2 time signatures, oreintal scale containing two augmented seconds.
Other studies in modern style will afford the future flute soloist of classical concerts useful preparation for the surprises that await him or her in performing the most complex works.
For those lacking sufficient knowledge of harmony, the name and formation of the main chords used are to be found at the bottom of the requisite pages (see glossary p. VI and translation p. 66).
We trust that the addition to the flute repertory of a new set of studies encapsulating the technical and musical qualities necessary for every instrumentalist desirous of following the evolution of modern music will find an indulgent welcome.
