Composer: Beethoven
Editor: Lee West

Instrumentation: Flute and Guitar

Originally for piano, it was completed in 1801, and dedicated in 1802 to his pupil Countess Julie Guicciardi. It was one of Beethoven's most popular piano sonatas, as well as one of his most famous compositions for the piano. The full title is Sonata Quasi Una Fantasia, as the name Moonlight Sonata comes from an 1832 description of the first movement. Music critic Ludwig Rellstab compared it to real moonlight shining upon Lake Lucerne. This arrangment is of the first movement, the Adagio sostenuto.
