North Star Overture portrays the feeling of looking into the night sky on a cold, crisp evening to find the North Star. The piece opens with a sparse opening that builds in intensity, just like the stars coming out as the night descends. The flutes give us the sound of the night breeze with wind sounds on the held notes. As it progresses the music increases in tempo and becomes an energetic piece with joyful flourishes for all the flutes.
North Star Overture was commissioned in 2017 by Kelly Via for the members of the 2017 NFA Collegiate Flute Choir and Deanna Little, coordinator. It was premiered at the 2017 National Flute Association Convention in Minneapolis, MN under the baton of Kelly Via.
