These Sonatas are arrangements, for two recorders, of Telemann's “Sechs Sonaten oder Kanons fur zwei Querfloten oder Violinen op. 5” (Six Sonatas or Canons for Two Transverse Flutes or Violins, Op.5). In his “Six Duets for Flutes or Violins,” Telemann suggested that recorder players should should simply read the music as if written in the French violin clef. The 1st, 2nd and 5th Sonatas in this book, played in that way, result in convenient keys for the recorder, and they have been transposed accordingly. This is not the case, however, with Sonatas #3, 4 and 6, which were therefore transposed ino D, G, and C minor, respectively, in order to bring them within technical reach of as many players as possible.
