This quintet, the first of the 24, was initially published by Simrock, in Bonn, in 1818. Reicha had already met the brilliant players that inspired him to begin his Woodwind Quintet creations. Note must be made, in this piece especially, of his very challenging and advanced use of the horn. In fact, we must recognize that all five of these instruments were at this time far more primitive than they soon became. Reicha's quintets hastened this process of improvement.
For this edition, a continuation of the complete cycle of the 24, I have relied on the parts edition from Mainz ca. 1850, (these were in the possession of oboist Josef Marx) and on subsequent markings and changes. These parts have few dynamics, all of which remain; some have been added. The Horn part, in the original, was given in E and D. Here, the Horn is given in the now universally accepted F. This is a virtuoso part, and always is in 'new notation'. That is, the Horn always sounds a fifth lower than written. The Clarinet was given in C; almost all players today would choose the Bb. In his later quintets, Reicha does specify Metronome tempo markings. There were none here; what are given for the third and fourth movements, although sprightly, work very well. In the parts I worked from, there are very few articulations. I have included all of these and added just a few. Also, I have included some 'end-of-section' phrasing; these occur in the very effective recording by the Schweitzer Quintet, and seem most appropriate for this work, which is already on the 'cusp' of the Romantic.
This is simple, powerful music, newly invented for the Wind Quintet, about 1815, by the composer. This edition should enable 21st century players, be they professional, amateur or student, to enjoy this path-breaking piece.
