Schott Flute Library
Original Pieces for Flute and Piano
Edited by Elisabeth Weinzierl and Edmund Wachter
Published by Schott
This collection presents a selection of original works for flute and piano or continuo bass published by Schott; it represents a history fo flute music spanning three hundred years. Repertorie pieces such as the 'Hamburg Sonata' by Carl Philipp Emanuel Back, Frederic Chopin's Variations on a theme by Rossini or 'Pan' by Albert Roussel appear here alongside less familiar music that invites flautists on a musical journey of discovery. There are many pieces from the Baroque era, starting with Georg Philipp Telemann. The transition to Classicism is represented with music from the court of Frederick the Great and lastly by Franz Anton Hoffmeister, friend and publisher of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. The little sonata by Louis Drouet, while classical in form, comes from a time already looking forward to Romanticism, an era notable for thrilling virtuosity as well as for lyrically emotive instrumental music and represented here by Theobald Bohm, Frederick Chopin, Wilhelm Popp, Camille Fontaine and Richard Strauss. Albert Roussel's 'Pan' is dedicated to Marcel Moyse, one of the most important proponents of the modern French flute school. Paul Hindemith and Bertold Hummel – who studied composition with one of Hindemith's students – represent classical modernism with musical miniatures.
In difficulty these sixteen pieces range between lower and upper intermediate level. Every flautist will thus find something here to add to their own repertoire, along with suitable pieces for youth music competitions and auditions.
This Flute Library is essentially based on original Schott editions. In a few cases scores have been adapted and notation standardized to match the requirements of modern Urtext editions.
