La Flute de Pan, Op. 15, was composed by Jules Mouquet in 1906 and is regarded as his best-known work. Written in a late-Romantic, Impressionistic style and based on Greek mythology, each of the three movements are preceded by a brief poem. This arrangement of the first movement, for solo flute and flute choir arose from my work reconstructing and editing a new edition of the orchestral score and parts.
While working on this piece, I got to know it very intimately, and although there were quite a few errors and discrepancies between the original orchestral score and subsequent editions, there is one in particular that stands out. In measure 20 of the first movement, it is my belief that every edition prior to this one has the incorrect notes for the solo flute, and the measure should be exactly the same as measure 114. I have implemented this alteration in this edition based on two observations – first, in the orchestral score, the notes which I believe to be “correct” are present; second, the “incorrect” motive does not appear anywhere else in the piece, whereas the “correct” motive is quoted exactly, multiple times.
I hope you enjoy playing this arrangement for solo flute and flute choir as much as I enjoyed creating it!
