Preface:
Pas de Trois is a playful, nimble piece for three flutes (piccolo, C flute, alto flute) that meet like dancers in a common dance.
Each of the three movements evolves from the music of the preceding one by quoting short fragments from it and developing them into something new.
The first movement is probably the most dance-like one of all and is structured with its lyrical central section in plain ABA form. The second movement develops an introspective soundscape from transitional motives of the first movement before taking on some momentum and leading back to dance.
In the third movement an almost 12-tone fugue takes shape, the three instruments dancing to a virtual frenzy before the movement slowly fades away with motives from all three movements.
