Places Remembered: general performance comments:
These pieces should be viewed as landscapes. They have fairly strong overall shapes but are not meant to be dramatic in terms of the human condition.
In movements 1 and 2, un-metered notation is used to help generate an improvisatory style of performance. Metronome marks should be understood to imply a general, but not rigid, underlying pulsation. Lengths of long notes and rests should not be taken literally.
Movement 3 is in a steady tempo. Boxes surround figures to be repeated, with a number after indicating a recommended number of iterations.
Tempi, articulation and dynamics shown in this edition are taken from rehearsals leading to its premier performance. They are not cut in stone.
