When Johannes Brahms composed the third movement (Poco Allegretto) of his Symphony No. 3, he broke with the standard tradition of that time period. Typically, in a symphony from the Romantic period, the third movement is something quick and brisk, like a Scherzo. Brahms decided to write something a bit slower, still in triple meter, but full of emotion and lyricism. Much of the movement features the cello section, of which the range and timbre is captured in this arrangement for Low Flute Choir by Jayne Traynor Rose.
Program Notes by Jayne Traynor Rose:
The Poco Allegretto from Symphony No. 3 of Johannes Brahms has long been a favorite work of mine, and something I have always wanted to arrange for Flute Choir. It was during a conversation with Aaron Goldman about Low Flute Choir arrangements that it all clicked and I knew I had found my newest arrangement.
Performance notes: The ensemble needs to be sure to keep the triplet patterns under the beautiful melody. While important to the score, those pesky triplets are really the cushion upon which the melodies perch.
