Instrumentation is as follows: Solo Flute, Clarinets 1-3, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Horns 1-2, Percussion 1-2, Harp (electronic keyboard/piano), Contrabass. Baritone part (alternate for Bassoon) and Tuba part (alternate for Contrabass) are also included.
A Note to the Conductor:
This wind ensemble arrangement is designed to make this composition playable by most high school clarinetists and instrumentalists. Please note that the Bb Instruments are written in the key of Eb, not in the key of F♯. This was done to keep the clarinets playing in a familiar key with ample accidentals to ease the reading of the parts.
Flute cues are given to the harp and the percussion players because of the great number of measures rest. Cueing from the conductor would also ensure the proper entrances of these important parts.
Alternate parts are also supplied for the bass clarinets, bassoons, and contra bass. These parts should be used sparingly and only if they are really needed. The bass clarinets and the bassoons play identical parts. It is hoped that with the enharmonic use in the Bb clarinet parts that this arrangement will provide opportunities for this fine flute work to be played more often.
The solo flute part provided with this edition has been changed to reflect what most serious flute players consider “all the right notes.” The first editions of this solo were rushed to give Griffes the opportunity to revise and edit them. This did not happen as he died before the music was ready for publication. If the performer wishes to use the original publication, it will work fine with this edition.
