Preludes, Vol. IV by David Loeb
For Solo Piccolo
Duration: 10:00 (for seven movements)
Unlike the three previous books of preludes, Volume IV does not directly come from specific Asian traditions, although one might well find influences here and there, especially in the last prelude. As with the earlier sets, each movement emphasizes a single mood. In performing either the entire book or a smaller selection one should take care to achieve contrasts of color and feeling between rather than within movements. Grace notes should be short, even in slow tempi, often understood as ornaments within longer tones, a frequently encountered aspect of music for Asian winds. The low C#s in the first prelude are produced by aiming down and rolling in, and at the same time partly covering the end of the piccolo with the right hand 5th finger.
