These Morceaux were originally written for a string trio of violin, viola, and cello. The opening Ballade features high, flowing melodies in the first flute supported by the other two instruments. The second movement, Dans le bois, has the two flutes working in counterpoint over the bass line. Reve, the third movement, starts with a serene flute tune before a more agitated middle section. The final scherzo is a romp across the full range of the flutes, with the lively counterpoint creating interest in both flute parts.
