For two flutes
Edited by Elisabeth Weinzierl and Edmund Wachter
Published by Barenreiter

The “Golden Age of the Flute” was dominated by the great virtuoso flutists of the romantic era. Their posthumous fame rests in countless works that continue even today to pose challenges and set standards in technical brilliance for every soloist. Yet these flutists also provided amateurs and novices with less demanding pieces and arrangements of well known and popular melodies by the great composers. That many of these melodies are songs or operatic arias is fully in keeping with a time-honored pedagogical precept aptly expressed by Theobald Böhm in Die Flöte und das Flötenspiel of 1871: “The flutist must learn to sing on his instrument”.
We have remained as faithful as possible to the musical texts of the originals, in some cases transposing them to accomodate the range of the Böhm flute commonly in use today. The Rákóczi March, named after the Hungarian Count György Rákóczi, is often wrongly attributed to Janos Bihari, a violinist well-known around 1800. In all likelihood however it was written by Miklos Scholl, the bandmaster of the 32nd Infantry Regiment “Fürst Esterházy”.
