Sephardic Melody (A Traditional Piece)
Includes score and parts
3 Flutes (with optional piccolo for flute 3 in movement 3)
2 Flutes and Alto Flute
I. Si Yona
II. Mekhol Alaat
“Si Yona”, a Hebrew dance melody, evokes a Biblical theme, that of women carrying water jugs to the well. This melody is accompanied by a hand drum, suggested by the percussive tonguing in the other voices. “Mekhol Alaat” is a Yemenite tune which accompanies a vigorous dance using sticks, and “Hanokdim” from Israel is the dance of joy.
Each voice has an opportunity to play the melody in one of the three movements, and hand drum or finger cymbals could even be added to enhance this very dance-like music. The Sephardic Medley was arranged as a result of my long collaboration with the popular Jewish ballet company Adama in Paris, and my thanks go to Ilan Zaoui for introducing me to this repertoire.
