The Shepherd's Song
Composed by Felix Mendelssohn (1792-1873)
For flute and piano
Piano accompaniment by Berthold Tours (1838-1897)
Edited by Andras Adorjan
Published by Schott
It is Mendelssohn's only original composition for flute. He was composed this short piece for solo flute in London on July 8th, 1829, on his first journey to England, and wrote it down as an Album Leaf. It was probably not intended for publication, as Mendelssohn was not always keen to see his Album Leaves published. Only after his death in 1889 was the piece published and a piano accompaniment added by Berthold Tours. The original manuscript has since disappeared, but a copy of first edition was rediscovered in 1992 in the British Library. It can be either performed as a solo flute piece or with the piano accompaniment.
