Description
Siegfried Idyll by Richard Wagner
Arranged for Flute Orchestra by Mel Orriss
Score and parts
Duration: c 20’00”
Instrumentation: Piccolo, 4 c flutes,2 alto flutes, 2 bass flutes, contrabass flute
Wagner composed Siegfried Idyll as a birthday present to his second wife, Cosima, after the birth of their son Siegfried in 1869. It was first performed by a chamber ensemble on Christmas morning in 1870. What a gift! The equal balance of low flutes in this setting allows the C flutes to sing over the top of the sumptuous harmonies, with a piccolo adding extra range and colour. Perfect for 10 accomplished players or flute orchestra.
