The story behind one of the most beloveds Christian hymns is well-known. Franz Gruber was inspired to compose this lilting melody on Christmas Eve of 1818 for tenor and bass with an accompaniment of two guitars. He was setting to music a poem written by the parish priest in their small Austrian village because the pipe organ was broken. This arrangement fully explores the tune, giving it to several different flute parts on occasion while providing various descant figures and colorful harmonies.
