Six Preludes – Studies on East Asian Pipes by David Loeb
For Solo Piccolo

There are various traditionsof performing on high pipes throughout the world. By thinking of the piccolo as the modern instrument repository for these traditions and this music, in the same sense that the piano is the modern instrument repository for all keyboard music, the piccolo's potential repertoire is vastly enlarged. It was with this definition of the piccolo in mind that David Loeb wrote these six preludes. The piccoloist need not copy all of the performance techniques of the original instruments. While it would be helpful to listen to music on the six Asian pipes, this music was composed for the modern piccolo and can be performed using primarily normal technique. The low C#s in Donglim and Suling are produced by aiming down and rolling in, and at the same time pertly covering the end of the piccolo with the right hand 5th finger.
