Description
Speak, Titania for flute and soprano by Richard Arnest
Includes two scores
This glimpse into Titania, joined to a faerie king who eternally pursues venery and bawdy jests, presents contrasting aspects of her character. The soprano shows the seductive side Oberon desires. The darker subtext presented by the flutist reflects submerged rage: “I know what you do when you're not around me.” The notation in Speak, Titania is essentially graphic. By convention, it is written with 4 quarter notes per measure with the quarter note paced at 60 beats per minute. This represents tactus, not meter. Its only purpose is to pace the performers within the 60-second timeline. The musical gestures flow smoothly across the bar lines.
