“States of Mind”, composed in 1998, portrays five of the many different moods that most people experience at some time or other. “First Light” creates an atmosphere of joy, of lightness and a feeling of well-being. “Loss” explores the grief which accompanies the death of a loved one orthe end of a deep relationship. “The Gift, or Journey to the Mountain”, represents an actual drum vision in which I “went” to Mount Rainier and entered a sacred place inside it. “Meditation” brings to mind the chants and antiphonal religious music of earlier centuries. “Release” evokes the lifting of physical, mental, or emotional burdens.
Because “States of Mind” portrays five unrelated moods, flute ensemble directors may choose to perform all five movements or just selected ones.
I. First Light
III. The Gift, or Journey to the Mountain
