Note to the student:
The patterns given here are intended to aid in learning. There is obviously a lot of repetition. One should choose from among these options, the version tha helps the most at any given time for a given intervalic relationship. Don't try to do them all at once.
Any of these patterns may be extended immediately to the entire range of the flute, turning around only at the top and coming back down the instrument. Since this method of approach is readily available in other books, I have not included it here.
The purpose of the exercises presented here is to break down the difficulties into smaller parts, thereby isolating dificult areas, providing variety in the way each area is covered, and also giving enough repetition to solidify the player's mastery of each technical hurdle.
The extra time spent in this type of study is well worth putting in, as it yields the kind of results that make the difference between amatuer and professional instrumentalists.
