Description
Two Sonatas ( E Minor BR WFB 17 and F Major BR WFB 18) for Flute and Basso Continuo by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach (1710 – 1784)
Urtext Edition edited by Peter Wollny; piano reduction by Paul Horn
These two Sonatas are typical examples of Wilhelm Friedemann Bach’s highly individual style, distinguished by close motivic dovetailing of melody and basslines, and by an accumulation of rhythmical, melodic and harmonic subtleties. The two works are, stylistically, on approximately the same level as the flute sonatas of CPE Bach, but they go beyond those works in the virtuosity which they demand, thus documenting the high standard of the Dresden flute school, which was geared to the legendary virtuosity of Pierre-Gabriel Buffardin (ca. 1690-1768). —- Peter Wollny
