Raphael Dressler(1784-1835) In writing these Variations on a Hungarian Theme, a typical Verbunkos(a traditional dance, mainly played by gypsy bands), Dressler was following the interest in Hungarian music that had arisen around 1790 and of which traces are also to be found in the works of Haydn, Beethoven or Schubert. There are six variations.
