Ingolf Dahl (1912-1970) originally composed Variations on a Swedish Folktune for solo flute in 1945, the same year that he joined the faculty of University of Southern California, seven years after emigrating to the United States. That solo version was published in 1946 in New Music Quarterly and is now available from Theodore Presser Company (114-40051).
Towards the end of his life, Dahl adapted the variations into the present duo for Flute and Alto Flute, looking back at the music 25 years later. While it is a rather faithful adaptation, the optional Variation 6 from the solo version has been deleted, and some rhythmic notation and articulation has been revised. Generally the C Flute carries the original theme and variations with the Alto Flute playing added music, but sometimes the reverse is true.
Dahl's manuscript was left with some dynamics and articulation possibly lacking; the present edition does not interpolate suggestions for these, leaving this matter up to the performers' discretion.
Variations on a Swedish Folktune for Flute and Alto Flute is recorded by Leone Buyse and Fenwick Smith on Crystal Records CD 317.
