Incorporates Hispanic folksongs of New Mexico collected by John Donald Robb
The quintet is a rhapsodic setting of five melodies collected by John Donald Robb (1812-1989) from the Hispanic communities of New Mexico. The opening measures (m. 1-18) introduce the melody Leupta, beginning a series of melodies in a light, compound meter including Al Pie de la Ladera (m. 19-60) and Mi Unico Bein (m. 62-84). The beautiful, plaintive cancion, Palomita Que Vienes Herida (m. 94-136), provides a striking contrast. Guanajuato is introduced at measure 141 and followerd by six variations (m. 153-252). The work concludes with a reprise of the opening two melodies.
