Yellow is a colour of subdued intensity. The label 'duo' reflects the equality between flute and piano. Each instrument exchanges ideas freely in the manner of a conversation. In the first measure, both piano and flute sound the two principal four note themes. The flute part has a continuous, uninterrupted melodic direction. The dynamics add contrast to the melody through push and pull phrases. The continuity and consistency of the work is interrupted by the two dance-like sections in the middle and at the closing of the piece.
Yellow's chief difficulty lies in tuning the flute with the quartal (intervals of a 4th) harmonies in the piano. The title of the piece is meant to reflect the colour of the open interval based textures in the piano. To the musicians, dissonance and polytonality are to be interpreted purely, without harshness. Ideally, Yellow is a composition of reserved mood.
