Chorale #8 is based on the famous chorale composed by Michael Praetorius, Behold a Rose is Blooming. The nature of this chorale prelude adapts well for flute ensemble. The slurred phrases were found in the original editions. These were intended to outline the phrases of this chorale prelude. Keyboard changes were indicated at the end of measures four, eight and fourteen in the original score. There are no dynamic markings in the original score. This would be in keeping with the baroque use of manual changes to affect dynamic alterations. The ability to create expressive phrases with the use of the swell manual was available during this period. It may be instruments familiar to Brahms did not have this innovation. Dynamic changes and articulation modifications are left to the discretion of the performers.
