The languid, steamy nature of this “slow-fast-slow” work, as well as its title, were premises of a consortium commission specifically to showcase the warm sounds of flugelhorn and alto flute.  Ballade creates this atmosphere through Dorff’s use of these special instruments’ low registers, with jazz vocal stylings and a theatrical approach to duet writing.
