The Versatile Gary Schocker

Gary Schocker is a leading musician of the twenty-first century. He is acknowledged as a gifted performer, teacher, and composer, combining to create the picture of a consummate musician. Three hundred years ago, it was more common for musicians to be involved in two of these professional roles, but it is much less common in the modern day-especially considering the success Gary Schocker has demonstrated in all three areas.
This book does not strive to be an exposé about the life of a public figure, but to serve as a guide to an a reference about the background of an artist who many people fondly refer to as their teacher, and to provide some insight into the most-published living writer of compositions for the flute. While the author intends for this volume to be honest and thorough, please note that this author has been a student of Gary Schocker, is a fellow performer and teacher, and is a friend. Therefore it will inevitably lean toward the generous side of each point of view. The author does not apologize for this, but simply offers it as an explanation. Although Gery Schocker may well be one of the most successful musicians in America today, precious little information is available about him or his music. There have been a few well-written articles in various flute journals that have served to introduce Mr. Schocker to people who may not have met him. There are, as well, two American Masters Theses (and one Italian Masters Thesis) that have been written about his music.
People who have attended classes and workshops led by Gary Schocker have consistently been impressed by his booad knowledge of all interrelated aspects of flute performance. Hundreds of newspaper articles and concert reviews have been written over the years, but access to these documents is limited. The author's hope is that this book will present a view of the professional life of this gifted musician. The background that brought him to the stature he currently enjoys in the musical world will be discussed, namely that of a world-renowned flutist, an award-winning composer, and a teacher who makes a difference in his student' lives every day.
