Preface:
It is often stated that Mozart disliked the flute, despite composing some of the greatest masterworks of the flautist’s repertory. Whether true or not, flute players are eternally grateful for the request for ‘three short simple concertos, and some quartets’ from the amateur flautist Ferdinand Dejean in 1777. Although he did not complete the commission fully, it was to result in the creation of many of Mozart’s significant works for the instrument: the Concertos in G major (K.313) and D major (K.314), the D major quartet (K.285) and the present Andante for flute and strings in C major (K.315) – here published with a piano reduction.
This beautiful work may have been intended as an alternative (easier) slow movement for the G major concerto; but could have been part of an unfinished third concerto. The autograph score is now held at the Paris Bibliotheque Nationale.
