About the Composition:
Another World Stood Here for flute ensemble (piccolo, five C, alto, bass and optional contrabass) by Howard J. Buss was composed immediately after an ancient oak tree was removed from his neighbor's yard. The composer states, “The crew worked for several days to dismantle and haul away the enormous tree. I had lived next to it for a quarter of a century. The deep sense of loss. It had become part of my life, and I reflected on how it served as home for countless birds and other animals, how it survived numerous hurricanes and lightning storms, and remembered the precious shade it provided during the long Florida summers. It is sorely missed. The work is dedicated to the memory of this ancient friend.”
Performance Note:
In several passages the piccolo player is asked to play off stage. If desired, an additional piccolo player may be stationed off stage so that the player on stage need not move from his/her seat during the performance. The off stage effect should be as if a bird is singing in the distance.
