Paul Taffanel's Arioso from Tchaikovsky's opera Eugene Onegin (Opus 24) is a free arrangement for flute and piano of an air from act 1. The piece was composed and premiered by Taffanel himself on Feb. 27th, 1888, at a reception in honor of the great Russian composer.
Taffanel's superb Arioso requires impeccable breathing technique (“The breath is the soul of the flute” wrote Taffanel in his Methode) and its beautiful melodic lines have that particular vocal quality which characterizes superior flute playing.
